RATIONALE
Since its inception in 1986, the department of HPER has turned out 12 sets of bachelor’s and 4 sets of master’s graduates in Physical Education. The growth in both the undergraduate and graduate programmes has created the need to expand the graduate programme and create additional options for students. This need was also evident from a general dissatisfaction with a lack of variety in the current programme of Physical Education. While still maintaining focus on teacher education, the main mission of the Faculty of Education, the time has come to provide a more diverse program that caters for the complex developmental needs of the nation. Beside the increasing need for highly trained leaders in Physical Education, Sports and Health Education in schools, the need to extend leadership training in physical fitness, health promotion, and leisure services to the non-school sector has been recognized by department. This is an initiative aimed at meeting the demand for physical fitness, sport and health education outside educational institutions. The reviewed programme will also serve as a watershed for the reviewed graduate programme that offers opportunity for specialization in seven concentration areas in health, physical education and sport.
