The Department of Vocational and Technical Education was established in 1993 through the assistance of the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and the Government Of Ghana. It continued throughout the 2005/2006 academic year with the task of preparing professionally-qualified vocational and technical educators for teaching, supervisory and leadership positions in education, training and the service industry.

The home Economics Programme, formerly located in the Department of Science Education, moved in to become the nucleus of the new department. The Department continued to offer a B.ED. Home Economics degree programme with students specializing in either Food and Nutrition or Clothing and Textiles, with Family Resources Management being compulsory.
